Your Diet Coke and Crystal Light Habit is Making You Fatter

A study published in Nature finds:

The artificial sweeteners that are widely seen as a way to combat obesity and diabetes could, in part, be contributing to the global epidemic of these conditions.

Scientists suspect artificial sweeteners — from lowly saccharine to high-tech aspartame — work with gut bacteria to make your body less able to use glucose as it should. The result? Metabolic syndrome, which is a fancy name for a bundle of diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

This supports what I’ve already found in the laboratory of my own body. When I avoid soft drinks (whether sweetened with sugar or artificially sweetened), I lose weight slowly and steadily. When I “reward” myself with the occasional diet drink, I see an immediate difference in the rate and consistency of my weight loss.

Two words: drink water.* You’ll feel better. You’ll look better. And you’ll be richer, to boot.

*And by water, I mean tap water. Smart Water, Vitamin Water, and other “enhanced” waters are nothing more than yet another strategy big companies use to part fools from their money. Don’t fall for it. Get smart from what you study, get vitamins from what you eat, and get healthy by drinking common, everyday water right from the tap.
