I have an obsession with lost places: homes, buildings, cities, or events rendered inaccessible by the passage of time.
So I’m in love with this collection of Depression-era photos from the Library of Congress. In lieu of the grainy, sepia-toned images you might expect, these rare photos vibrate with color. As a result, the slices of life, the humble homes, and the earnest faces captivate me all the more.
I would very much like to visit the little carnival depicted here: to drink a cold Coke from a glass bottle, hear the hoarse voice of the barker on the midway, and pay a nickel to take in “Teddy the Wrestling Bear” with the local crowd.
The last photo in this online exhibit — the coal miner — took my breath away. (via BoingBoing)
