On the Road Again – Detroit

I took the photo above on our first night in Lisbon, strolling in the Alfama district. Just after sunset, the streetlights came up, casting a warm, golden glow on everything from the storefronts to the cobblestones.

What I treasure most about this moment, though, has less to do with this specific place, and more with what I was feeling at the time: the thrill of a new adventure, the glow of a great meal, the presence of family.

Today, we’re off to Detroit — not exactly a warm winter destination. There’s an auto show going on, and there’s a pizza place or two I’m eager to check out on Indulgence Day (the one day a week I eat whatever I want). But the real reason I’m headed to Detroit? To see two old friends we haven’t seen in more than a year.

No street cars … no cobblestones … no Portuguese wine. Nope — just four solid days with two folks we’ve loved for more than fifteen years now, but see very rarely.

That’s what makes trudging around in eight inches of fresh snow in sub-zero wind chill something I can’t wait to do. It’s not about being in Detroit, but about the *feeling* of having been there last year, with good friends, just sharing the time.
