A Bantam and Biddy Breakfast Breakup

A Bantam and Biddy Breakfast Breakup

IMG_2643

I’m in Bantam and Biddy. I’m sitting in a corner table, waiting for my to-go order of a local farm three-egg omelet with spinach, goat cheese, and roasted chicken. Across from me is a cute couple: a petite, athletic blonde girl and her lanky, dark-haired boyfriend.

It takes me a second to realize that, in addition to sharing an order of chicken and waffles, they’re breaking up.

The young woman smiles and nods. “Is it because of what I think it is?”

“Busted,” he says. “Yeah, I’m gay.”

She beams at him. “Honestly, that explains so much. I mean, I thought it was me.”

“It’s not you,” he says.

“Oh, I know!” she says. She pauses, rewinding and reviewing memories in her head. “I always did. You seeing someone?”

He hesitates. “Yes.”

“A guy?”

He nods.

She lights up, grinning like a game show contestant. “Bradley!”

He nods again.

She drums her hands on the tabletop, excited. “Are you two happy?”

He shrugs. “We’re still … deciding. I mean, it hasn’t been that long–”

“Well, I hope it works out.” She slips on her jacket and gathers her purse, smiling broadly. “Thanks for breakfast.”

He blinks. “You going?”

“Yep!” She stands. She winks. She offers him a hug.

He stands. He’s a full head taller than her. They hug. “We’ll still be friends.”

“Nope!” she says, raising a hand. “Got plenty of friends. I need a boyfriend.” She beams at him again. “You be sweet now.” She leaves.

He sits, sighs, and wolfs down the rest of the waffles.
